Quickie Catch Up

Another week has flown by here in South Carolina.  Time seems to move swiftly here; I still have not figured out why that is so, unless it is the hours we keep these days.

Sunday night after my midnight-ish patrol run, I performed my usual sweep with my flashlight of the grassy area across the street from our RV home.  I routinely do this when I get out of the truck.  I will often seen a pair or two of eyes reflecting back at me and this was true of this time.  Up until this particular night, the eyes have belonged to deer.  Not so this time . . .

Two dogs were in what I consider our “personal space” up here.  One loped away after being in the flashlight’s beam; at first glance I thought it might be a coyote, since they are around.  (We have heard them singing occasionally and have seen them on the outer parts of the property but never this close).  The other one was much larger and muscular-appearing; it stood its ground and looked at me.

By this time, my heart was thump-thumping.  I slowly but deliberately made my way to the office door, unlocked it and got inside.

Thump-thump.

If that big one had really wanted me, it could have gotten to me.  Well, that was exciting, to put it mildly.

I do carry an air horn and pepper spray, but would rather not have to use either.  If I see either of these two again, they’ll be treated to a nice horn blast.  Hopefully they will get the idea that they are not welcome this close to our space.

This area is the worst I have ever seen about tough-looking dogs being loose and/or stray.  One sees them in just driving to the store, Dave has been chased while out riding the bike and so on.

Not a good thing.

Moving along, I took one day this week and ran a “me” errand.  Enjoyed myself immensely.

We dealt with frozen pipes to the office one night when the low dropped into the teens and the wind chill was in single digits.  We were lucky that no pipes were burst on the property, and everything has thawed out nicely.  No worries about our rig.  We are running off our fresh tank here.  That night I turned off the water pump and opened the faucets to drain the pipes.  We were good.

Thinking that the water might freeze up again last (Thursday) night, I got a couple loads of laundry done during my work shift.  That means I have Saturday and Sunday free of the laundry routine.  Yay!  I’m thinking Saturday may be a good day to crank out another batch each of sausage balls and olive/cheese puffs.  Sunday is warmer, but the rains come again.

Seemed  like today was “girlfriend phone call day,” as I talked with three of my dear women friends.  Hearing their voices and sharing stories and laughter always does my soul good.

You’ll see two quotes below; I’m catching up from the 8th and 9th.

“It is well to be good to women in the strength of our manhood because we must sit under their hands at both ends of our lives.”

- He Dog, Oglala Sioux

“Civilization has been thrust upon me . . . and it has not added one whit to my love for truth, honesty, and generosity.”

- Luther Standing Bear, Oglala Sioux, 1868-1937
